Found near the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour - the current here at times is fierce. However great fun can be had with Pollack, Mackerel and Garfish - use the current to your advantage with light float tackle or a spinning rig. See below for the latest reports.
06/11/07 : Nick caught Wrasse and a 2lb Bass during the day using Ragworm for bait, he says "I was next to an old guy who was after the mullet, he had a big bag of bread and a float rod, and managed to pull a few in while I was there, he recommended live baiting but I had a bag full of 'rag' so lobbed a few worms out to start, had loads of wrasse, ballan and cuckoo. I was wandering past the day before and watched a guy pull out a great big cuckoo wrasse on 'rag'. I then dropped down a hook size to a 4 for the smaller fish chopped a 'rag' in half and managed to bag a 2lb bass about 3 foot from the end of the pier! I had to borrow the old guys drop net."

Best to use a 20 pound line and old tackle as you will get snagged a fair bit, so suggest a pulley rig."

the other rod for Bass. Will be back to try again next week though
."

Really difficult to spot bites with the rod tips dancing around in the gale. The rain started again at about 20:30 which made the last hour pretty miserable. Quit at 21:30 when the wind got so strong that even 6oz grippers couldn't keep the bait on the bottom anymore. All fish were returned. Great to catch 4 species in one session even if they were all tiny."

Many anglers plump for the outfall pier - you'll need a drop net for the large Bass ! Try from the beach casting alongside the pier for many species - in particular Pout, Bass and Mackerel. The current is fierce here - use a 6oz gripper weight if there's not too much drifting weed. Cuttlefish chunks under a float may work for Bass. See below for the latest reports.
