1. HILL-HEAD

An interesting mark consisting mainly of shallow mud flats with deeper channels just offshore - famous for a run of superb, hard-fighting Smoothhounds in the summer months, with double-figure fish being regularly caught on crab baits - hold on to your rod !!  Also good for Thornback Rays, Flounder, Sole and Eels. See below for the latest reports.

08/05/08 : Pedro (pedro) caught an 8lb Starry Smoothhound at night using Peeler Crab for bait, he says "Spring tide, very calm, a little bit weedy, fished for 4hrs."

19/04/08 : The Pompey Bait Drowners (Darryl +1) caught Dogfish, Whiting and Pouting at night using Ragworm and Mackerel for bait, they say "Wind dropped off, no rain = calm pleasant evening, and we didn't blank!"

05/04/08 : Allen and Martin (Ekyone and martinr) caught Whiting, Pouting and Dogfish at night using Sandeels for bait, they say "Fished from 21:00 to 01:30 with H/W at 00:05 a generally slow session with about a dozen or so fish in total. Wind was a light westerly with flat calm sea and it was pretty cold."

23/03/08 : Darrin and Gary (chill 1 and black mafia) caught Whiting, Pout and small Bass at night using Ragworm, Black Lugworm and Squid for bait, they say "Fished 9pm till 12.30ish off the wall. Had lots of little taps over the few hours. All fish taken on rag/lug tipped with small piece of squid. Fairly calm night and not too cold. Did my fair bit of weed dredging! I reckon all bites were small fish and I have to admit its better than blanking but I need to feel something pulling back...Bring on the smuts!!!!!. Gary had a few and a small Bass and I have to say he caught what is probably  the world's smallest ever whiting."

28/11/07 : Rik (lord_winchester) didn't catch anything except a crab at night using Mackerel, Squid and Ragworm for bait, he says "A few little nibbles constantly getting the bait, but having reeled in 1 crab can only assume that's all that was out there!"

2. LEE-ON-THE-SOLENT

A long steeply shelving shingle beach capable of producing some good fishing but it is generally a smaller fish mark. The most common fish caught here include Pout, Rockling, Poor Cod, Whiting, some Flounder, Dogfish, School Bass and very occasionally Cod. The ground here is not rough, you are fishing over mud, clay and sandy patches with the very occasional snags. Rig losses should not be a problem and the tide run is not fast. The water is quite deep as you go towards Browndown but it shallows the nearer to the Daedelus slipway that you go. It offers different types of fishing depending on which end you go so pick your spot well.  See below for the latest reports.

10/04/08 : Gordon (geejay) caught Pout and a 9 1/2lb Thornback Ray during the day and night using Ragworm, Lugworm, Squid, Sandeel and Slipper Limpet he says "Not a bite in daylight but I fished low water from the shingle bank then later from the main beach. caught the ray about 1.30 am."

04/04/08 : Brian (Bikerboy) caught Pout and Whiting at night using Ragworm, Mackerel and Squid for bait, he says "Fished 21:30 - 00:30 (HW 23.30 ish) almost a fish a cast using worm but only small pout, a few small whiting to worm or mackerel, nothing on squid. Not so many after HW. Similar for other anglers."

20/03/08 : Allen and Martin (Ekyone and martinr) caught Pouting, Whiting, Dogfish and a 10lb 4oz Thornback Ray at night using Peeler crab, Ragworm, Sandeel and Mackerel for bait, they say "Started fishing about 20:30 with H/W at 23:00. Had a steady stream of Pout with the odd Whiting and Dogfish thrown in. Al had the Thornback about half an hour after H/W on Sandeel, a very nice fish. The wind was a very strong westerly with the odd light shower."

26/01/08 : Allen, Martin and Ray ( Ekyone, martinr and Raymond) caught Whiting, Pouting, Rockling and Codling at night using Ragworm, Black Lugworm, Squid and Mackerel for bait, they say "Fished 22:00-03:30 with H/W at 02:30. We had plenty of bites from the off, catching small Pout, Whiting and Rockling with the odd sizable Whiting thrown in, Martin got a 1 1/2lb Codling at H/W that should have been a good 2 1/2lb but it was extremely skinny, nice fish all the same. Not a bad session for the time of year."

29/11/07 : Gordon (geejay) caught Whiting at night using Squid,, Black Lugworm and 'bluey' for bait, he says "It was yting, yting, yting from the get go, with a definite preference for squid, caught about a dozen between 10-14 inch, but nothing any better. It was a pleasant night with light winds from the s/w, high water was about 2-3am."

3. BROWNDOWN BAY

A long stretch of shingle beach backing onto a MOD base and firing range. Don't enter when the red flags are flying ! Is apparently a nudist beach too, keep your eyes on your rod tip ! You can expect many species here including Thornback Rays in the Spring. It can produce good numbers of fish and also some unexpected catches like Red Gurnards. The most likely species to be found here are Pout, Whiting, Rockling, Flounder, Plaice, Dab and a slim chance of Codling and Bass. Browndown does not suffer with a fast tide run although it does speed up nearer the point in the middle of the ranges. A 4 - 5oz grip lead is all that is required. See below for the latest reports.

13/04/08 : John (joc128) and Andy didn't catch anything during the day and night using Ragworm and baby Squid for bait, they say " Set up at 16.00hrs, packed up at 20.30hrs, not a single bite, very disheartening, we both went home dejected!"

06/04/08 : Mark caught 9 Dogfish at night using Mackerel, Squid and Ragworm for bait, he says "Fished 3 hours of tide coming in then fished it out, fish were steady all the time."

03/04/08 : Neil caught Whiting, Pouting and a small Smoothhound in the evening using Ragworm, Lugworm and Squid for bait, he says "Started fishing about 1700 hrs with a new lad to sea fishing, quiet to begin with then just after the sun went down it was a bite a cast. Had lots of pout/whiting and one small smut, largest pout about 8 oz same for the whiting, although none were keepers good fun and kept the new lad interested."

14/03/08 : Anthony (theant) caught 2 Pouting and 5 Whiting at night using Ragworm, Sandeel and Mackerel for bait, he says "Fished from about 9pm until 1.30am either side of low tide plenty of small bites, most fell to ragworm."

04/01/08 : Allen (Ekyone) caught Rockling, Whiting and Pout at night using black Lugworm and baby Squid for bait, he says "Wind, rain and weed conspired to make this a thoroughly miserable session. Fished 3hrs up to H/W and in fairness I did have plenty of bites and about a dozen or so fish."

4. STOKES BAY

A wide, shallow shingle bay giving way to sand. Good fishing all year but is extremely busy in the Summer months with swimming/boating activities, during the day try elsewhere. The species most likely to be encountered here are Pout, Dabs, Flounder, Plaice, Sole, Eels, small Smoothhound, Rockling, school Bass and the odd Dogfish. The ground here is not rough but the water is quite deep at range, rig losses should be at a minimum. Weed can be a problem at this venue but it does not last the whole tide. If you are finding weed at medium range then drop in close or likewise if the weed is in close bang one out further. The tidal flow here is not fast but grip leads should be used with weights kept to 4 - 5oz. Fish should be found at all ranges with the Dogfish staying further out. See below for the latest reports.

05/04/08 : Mark (Lowie) caught Whiting and Pout during the day and night using Ragworm, Squid and Mackerel for bait, he says "We fished 2hrs light no bites, 4hrs dark which resulted in lots of small pout and 7 whiting 1 sizable."

16/03 /08 : Gord (Geejay) caught Pout, Whiting, Rockling and Flounder using Ragworm, Squid, Sandeel and Mackerel for bait, he says "Slow but steady night not much doing as the tide ebbed, it was cold, calm with a northerly wind."

08/02/08 : The Pompey Bait Drowners (darryl+3) caught Bass, Pollack, Rockling, Whiting and Pout for bait, they say "30+ fish caught, only 1 of size (whiting 3/4lb), bites all night bar high tide hour, five species in early Feb, can't complain."

02/02/08 : Stu caught Whiting, Pout and Codling at night using Mackerel Squid and Sandeel for bait.

05/01/08 : Allen and Martin (Ekyone and martinr) caught Whiting, Rockling and Pouting at night using Ragworm, black Lugworm and Squid for bait, they say "Fished from 18:00-22:30 a fairly slow session with all of the 15 or so under-size fish being caught at close range. Didn't get a bite at distance, quite a strong westerly breeze but not much weed and no rain."

5. GILKICKER POINT

A steep, shingle beach giving way to sand and deep water. Large Plaice in spring and double figure Cod in Winter amongst many other species including shoals of Mackerel in summer, make this a fine mark. The very strong current and drifting weed can be a problem particular during the summer months. See below for the latest reports.

07/05/08 : Spence (Spence) caught 2 Spotted Rays and Pout at night using Mackerel, Sandeels and Peeler Crab for bait, he says "Fished just right of the point, the first four hours of the flood from 8.00pm till midnight. At 9.30ish had the first of two spotted rays, a female, fell to mackerel and tipped the scales at 4lb 2oz. Within an hour the second a male an ounce short of 3lbs fell to sandeel. Only other fish caught were the obligatory pout of which I only had half a dozen. Light breeze from the East and only a small amount of weed to contend with made for a pleasant night."

21/04/08 : The Gosport Pimps (chris g) caught a Spotted Ray, 5 Dogfish, 17 Pout, a Rockling, a Whiting and a Smoothound pup during the day and night using Ragworm, Mackerel and Crab for bait, they say "Started fishing around 7ish, had the ray just before it got dark. Most fish taken on rag, doggies took mackerel. Very calm night, barely felt the cold, barely any weed. Fished to about half 11. Very fun night."

12/04/08 : John (jonboy) and friends caught Dogfish, Pout and Whiting in the evening using Ragworm, Squid, Mackerel and Sandeel for bait, they say "Had 5 dogfish, 23 pout and 1 whiting, fished the tide down then back up, knocks at all state of the tide, was really windy when we got there but calmed down by 11ish."

30/03/08 : James and Surjan caught Pollack, Whiting, Bass, Sole one unknown during the day using Lugworm for bait, they say "Fished from about 13:30 up to the high tide at 18:00 and an hour afterwards. Had nothing for first couple of hours, but then a busy period with small pollack, whiting, a bass and a little unknown ugly thing - a very mixed bag. Only fish of any size was a nice sole, but the spot showed plenty of promise. Would recommend a 4-5oz weight as we couldn't quite get out to the bigger fish with 3oz.."

19/03/08 : Spence (Spence) caught Pout, a Dogfish and a Smoothhound pup at night using Sandeel, Ragworm and Squid for bait, he says "Fished the last 4 hours of the flood and 2 hours of the ebb, just right of the point on a chilly night with a bright moon quite frequently breaking through the cloud cover. Cold breeze from the NW, weed not a problem, only a little collected on shock-leader knot. Pout were a problem, were on any bait as soon as it hit the water. Lost count of how many pout, smut pup was just 1.5lb."

6. HASLAR WALL

A long, steep wall near the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour, which can be extremely slippery and dangerous in places, particularly when wet, with deep water all along with a sand/stony bottom and a moderate current. At the northern end, accessed by the Detention Centre road, you can sit in your car in bad weather which is handy, but you'll need a tripod for your rods. There's a car park behind the southern end. Plenty of Wrasse, Bass, Whiting, Pouting, Mackerel and sometimes Cod. See below for the latest reports.

04/05/08 : Phil (Scipio) caught over 20 Pouting at night using Ragworm for bait, he says "Fished from the wall with rag, two hook rig, 2 hours before high tide and 1 hour after. Was hoping for bass but just ended up catching 20+ pouting. Largest about half a pound. Got fed up in the end and went home!"

19/01/08 : Richard caught 3 Rockling, a Pouting, 2 Whiting, a Pollack and an unknown fish at night using Ragworm tipped with Black Lugworm for bait, he says "Fished between 6:30pm to 10:30pm, using a 3 hook boom rig, the one I can't name looked a bit like a devil fish. Anyway a good night's catch with various species."

05/01/08 : Rich caught 5 Whiting at night using Ragworm and Lugworm for bait, he says "Fished the wall between 7-10pm and had bites all night! Managed to reel in 5 whiting which were returned to the sea."

23/11/07 : Tom (TheFlyingScot) caught 2 small Codling and 2 small Whiting at night using frozen Black Lugworm tipped with 2 whole 'party' Squid for bait, he says "Fished from 1900 up over high tide opposite the clock tower. Loads of vicious bites but only the 2 small codling and 2 small whiting were takers. All fish returned safely."

18/11/07 : Mark (showmythefishy) caught a 2 1/2lb Bass in the afternoon using Ragworm and Peeler Crab for bait, he says "Well despite the horrible weather I managed to get out of the house for a couple of hours! Parked up in my usual spot along the wall (by the 1st set of steps) the wind was blowing straight in my face and kept blowing over my rod rest as I was trying to get set up! Undeterred I used my wing mirror to hold my rod after I cast out and watched as the tip bounced around in the wind! After a couple of casts I was giving up but to my surprise the rod tip gave a definite bang then the rod almost went over as the fish tried to make off with the bait, it put up a decent fight in the strong current and heavy swell but I managed to get it up the wall to unhook a 2.5lb bass (returned safely). I had a couple of casts after that but was getting wetter and colder by the minute so packed up at around 4.30pm and went home. Chuffed I caught something tho' (even if it wasn't a cod!)."

7. THE MILLENNIUM PIER

A short pier built as part of the Millennium Developments. As with all piers anything that breaks up an otherwise featureless seabed will attract all sizes and types of fish including Pout, Mackerel, Bass, Pollock, Bass, Eels, Whiting, Smoothhounds, Dogfish, Rays, Cod and Plaice. Can get very crowded in daylight, if you're after some peace and quiet it's probably best to wait until dark or try elsewhere. If you cast a long way the tide is very strong. It's worth putting a big bait on a long running lead straight down along the wall for Bass. Casting diagonally out from the end nearest the 'green boat' the tide is not so fierce and is still quite deep, a good spot for Pollock, try using a couple of plastic or metal booms set quite a way up from the lead and twitch it back every few minutes. See below for the latest reports.

03/10/07 : Mickael caught Pout, Whiting, Wrasse, Bass, Bream and Sole during the day using Ragworm, Lugworm and Squid for bait, he says "All fish undersize except the unexpected Sole which was a beauty, caught just after high tide (about 5pm), a fair way out from the end of the pier on 'lug'."

16/06/07 : Joe and Sean caught 10 Wrasse and 2 Pollack during the day using Ragworm for bait, they say "Lots of nice sized Wrasse and two large Pollack, good day's fishing!"

07/05/07 : Dave (firefox) caught 3 Pollack during the day using Ragworm for bait, he says "Fished from 2pm 'til 730pm had lots of bites but keep missing them, not a bad afternoon, first time I have fish at this place, was too rough at Hill-Head where I tried first."

10/03/07 : Billy and his Mum caught a Plaice, a Devil Fish and a small Pollack during the day using Ragworm tipped with Mackerel for bait, they say "The night after fishing Lee when I had a nice Bass me and my mum went down the pier to use the remains of out bait. We started at low water which was very poor, then it started fishing well 1 hour before high tide when I caught my Plaice (30cm) and then a Devill Fish on the ebb, my mum caught a little Pollock, undersize tho'. Overall a great days' fishing."

28/11/06 : Ray caught 6 Pollack and 4 Pout from the bridge at night using Mackerel for bait, he says "Good sized fish, 3 hrs after high tide on a mild clear night."
